ADB Serukan Togetherness Barring Asia Pacific HIV/AIDS

BUSAN, KOMPAS.com — the Asian Development Bank (Asian Development Bank/ADB) calling on the Government's commitment and partnership in the Asia Pacific region to prevent the spread of the virus causes a loss of immune (human immunodeficiency virus/HIV) that causes the disease acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Speaking at the opening of the 10th International Congress on AIDS-Asia and the Pacific, at Busan, South Korea, Thursday (29/8/2011), ADB Vice President for knowledge management and sustainable development of Ursula Schaefer-Preuss stressed the need for political and economic commitment and continuous improvement of cooperation among the partners in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

"By working with Governments, civil society, affected populations, the private sector, and communities, we together can move forward in halting the spread of the epidemic in Asia and the Pacific," said Schaefer-Preuss in a press release that aired in the ADB ADB, Monday.

Since the first cases of HIV reported 30 years ago, the Government in the area, with the support of civil society, community and development partners, has made steady progress in slowing the transmission of the virus and treat those affected.

Congress is the largest HIV/AIDS in the Asia-Pacific region and second largest in the world that has attracted thousands of representatives from public and private sectors, civil society, academia, and the affected communities and development partners, including the ADB.

The Government of South Korea to host the Congress which took place on 25-30 August. ADB hosted five events, including a discussion of HIV mitigation in the construction of infrastructure.

ADB's support is mainly focused on mitigation of HIV/AIDS in the development of infrastructure, especially roads cross the border in the Greater Mekong Subregion, where specific risk and vulnerability has occurred. ADB was also involved in public-private partnership in Mongolia and Papua New Guinea, as well as in regional initiatives such as data center AIDS for Asia and the Pacific.

The ADB also works closely with UNAIDS and Unicef to ensure that ongoing initiatives and the local health system capable of responding effectively.
